5/24/2012: MISSING FAMILY ALERT: Authorities in Washtenaw County, Michigan are asking for the public’s help to find Alisha Martinez (29) and her kids, 8-year-old Areiyla Middleton and 3-year-old Elijah Isom were last seen Tuesday morning, 5/22/2012 at their Ypsilanti Township home. “We recieved a call yesterday actually, on the 23rd, but the last time that the mom and her children were seen was early morning on the 22nd, around 8, 8:30 in the morning,” said Derek Jackson with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. The older child did not go to school Tuesday and has not been to school since.

“[There is] no evidence that she is injured in any way or [of] any foul play,” said Jackson. “We just are trying to hopefully get some information from someone or even her herself — where she is or … what may have happened.”

Martinez is described as 5’1” and about 117 lbs.

Anyone with information as to the family’s whereabouts is asked to call Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Detective Everette Robbins (734) 973-4884.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters… S.T..R …
My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a party, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. (they offered to call an ambulance)

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital. At 6:00 pm, Ingrid passed away.
She had suffered a stroke at the party. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this…

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the ‘3’ steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.
The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions :

S * Ask the individual to SMILE ..
T * = TALK. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (eg ‘It is sunny out today’).
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the ambulance and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE : Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is
1. Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue.
2. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A prominent cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Despite this, any attempt to make media- even media that could be available for free otherwise (see Sherlock, which airs on public television)- available gets peoples accounts shut down and sometimes slaps them with lawsuits. When the media is available, it can cost around $50 to get a reasonable playlist or buy a single season of a TV show. They told me the big black Lab’s name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen. The shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I’d only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn’t hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie’s advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn’t look like “Lab people,” whatever that meant. They must’ve thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes and a sealed letter from his previous owner.

See, Reggie and I didn’t really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too.
Maybe we were too much alike.

I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that. “Okay, Reggie,” I said out loud, “let’s see if your previous owner has any advice.”

To Whomever Gets My Dog:

Well, I can’t say that I’m happy you’re reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie’s new owner. I’m not even happy writing it. He knew something was different.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you.

First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I think he’s part squirrel, the way he hoards them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn’t done it yet. Doesn’t
matter where you throw them, he’ll bound after them, so be careful. Don’t do it by any roads.

Next, commands. Reggie knows the obvious ones —-“sit,” “stay,” “come,” “heel.”

He knows hand signals, too: He knows “ball” and “food” and “bone” and “treat” like nobody’s business.

Feeding schedule: twice a day, regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand.

He’s up on his shots. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car. I don’t know how he knows when it’s time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time. It’s only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He’s gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn’t bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially.

And that’s why I need to share one more bit of info with you…His name’s not Reggie. He’s a smart dog, he’ll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I just couldn’t bear to give them his real name. But if someone is reading this … well it means that his new owner should know his real name. His real name is “Tank.” Because, that is what I drive.

I told the shelter that they couldn’t make “Reggie” available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. You see, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could’ve left Tank with .. and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call to the shelter … in the “event” … to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my CO is a dog-guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he’d do it personally. And if you’re reading this, then he made good on his word.

Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family, too, and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he
loved me.

If I have to give up Tank to keep those terrible people from coming to the US I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right, that’s enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. Maybe I’ll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure, I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver
Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

“Hey, Tank,” I said quietly.

The dog’s head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.

“C’mere boy.”

He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn’t heard in months. “Tank,” I whispered.

His tail swished.

I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my
face into his scruff and hugged him.

“It’s me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me.” Tank reached up and licked my cheek.

“So whatdaya say we play some ball?” His ears perked again.

“Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?”

Tank tore from my hands and disappeared into the next room. And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.”

Homeless in Oakland, Please Help! URGENT

Hi followers, my friend and I are both homless in Oakland and we desperately need a place to stay. Even one night is fine, but we are exhausting a lot of time and energy (things we’re both dearly short on) trying to find a new place to stay every single night. We’re both transgender, one trans man and one genderqueer trans woman, one white one mixed, we only have a little little bit of money. We’re in Oakland trying to find a permanant residence for our housemates (there are 10) because we can’t afford to pay rent where we are anymore where we are, and those of us who are disabled can get on disability here. If we don’t find a place for all of us, we’re all fucked, and that’s not an option- so my housemates are counting on us to find a place here. We can’t find a place if we have nowhere to stay at night, so please please consider having us. We will only be there at night and can sleep on the floor, we have sleeping bags. Hell, we’ll sleep in the bathroom. 10 poor trans people are fervently depending on this, so please boost and contact anyone and everyone you think would even possibly help us, even your grandma or 2nd grade teacher if you have to. We also have a friend with a disability who is about to leave

We also have anther housemate here with a disability who currently has a place on a couch but not for very much longer- if you could also/instead/know someone else who could let them stay over it would be deeply appreciated. Ideally they need a bed but a couch will also work.

TLDR: We are two poor trans kids homeless in Oakland and desperately need a place to stay so we can go out during the day and look for permanent housing for our other housemates back home.

If you have space and are unwilling to share it because that makes you or your housemates “uncomfortable” for a couple of poor kids to be in it, please urge them/ask yourself to consider the implications of classism, ableism, transphobia/transmisogyny, and general selfishess. What’s “uncomfortable” is homelessness, lack of access to health needs, and highly increased rate of arrest/assault/sexual assault we’re at on the street- not to mention our other housemates who will also be in that situation if we don’t find a place. You have privileges we couldn’t dream of, and we are desperately reaching out to you- please don’t turn us away.
